To the Editor:
The most frightening Halloween just occurred, when Susie, our old, deaf and mostly blind dog disappeared.
Caring neighbors saw and tried to catch her, but she was too frightened to go to them. After that, she utterly vanished amid rain and ice weather.
An extended search began, involving the Potsdam Humane Society, dog warden, DEC, police, forest service, Facebook, a psychic, strangers, neighbors, SUNY security, baited live traps, flyers, posters, door-to-door inquires, a Clarkson-related drone search, and finally a call to “Lost Pet Tracking Dogs” at 207-200-8060 up in Portland, Maine.
No stone left unturned.
Then, the blessed call came to our cell phone which had become “Rescue Central.” Wonderful SUNY students had corralled her and kept her safe in their student housing. We rushed over, to find a thin, trembling and disheveled Susie, head down, among caring new friends.
We were all joyful.
Lessons learned: thank God Susie was chipped, collared and tagged. Individual searchers, authorities and drones were a blessing.
And if all else fails, call “Lost Pet Tracking Dogs” at 207-200-8060. Amen!
