A type 1 diabetes mentor program called “One to One” is now being offered for type 1 diabetics in St. Lawrence County.
The new “One to One” support group, offered by the Cure-iers, is tailored toward one on one mentoring for those with type 1 diabetes.
Those who are interested in a type 1 buddy or type 1 diabetics interested in mentoring should contact Rose Edward at thecure-iers@live.com.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body kills off insulin producing pancreatic beta cells. The dead cells loose the ability to produce insulin, so those with type 1 diabetes must inject insulin to survive.
Most type 1 diabetics permanently lose their pancreatic function in childhood, and the disease can come on very suddenly.
It is recommended that you have a simple test for blood sugar or urine sugar level performed if you have the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, excessive hunger, excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, irritability and mood changes.
Type 1 diabetics can consume sugar as long as they use the right amount of insulin to compensate.
