OGDENSBURG — City council members are expected to hear a presentation Monday on a proposed community art project for Ogdensburg's celebration of America's 250th anniversary.
Representatives of the Ogdensburg History Museum will outline plans for an America 250 Mosaic Mural, a large-scale public artwork that organizers hope to install on a prominent downtown building. The museum is seeking an interested party to host the mural.
The completed mural would measure 7 feet high by 12 feet wide and would be created through a collaborative process that combines professionally designed artwork with tiles painted by local residents.
Museum officials say the project is intended to celebrate the nation's semiquincentennial and draw additional attention to downtown businesses and historical sites.
The mural would be assembled from hundreds of individual tiles. Professional mosaic artists would create the framework of the design, while approximately 200 community participants, including students from the Ogdensburg City School District, would paint the remaining tiles. Once completed, the pieces would be assembled into a weather-resistant installation designed for long-term outdoor display.
According to the presentation, the project would not require painting or altering a building's exterior. Instead, the completed mosaic would be mounted on a heavy-duty backer board that could be securely attached to a structure without causing damage.
The presentation says all costs associated with materials, assembly and installation would be covered through funding partnerships.
The mural is being funded through support from the St. Lawrence County Arts Council, the St. Lawrence County America 250 Commission and the Ogdensburg City School District.
The museum is currently seeking a highly visible location for the artwork and is inviting interested property owners to discuss potential sites. Organizers say they are prepared to meet with building owners to review placement options, provide visual renderings and address any questions related to maintenance, insurance or installation. Interested parties can reach out to Julie Madlin at 315-528-0733.
The proposal is expected to be discussed during Monday night's meeting.
