OGDENSBURG -- Local art, discount furniture, glassware, antiques and toys are all part of the scenery at Ray's Odds 'n' Ends, 940 Ford Street.
The store is owned and operated by Ray Harmon Sr. and his son Ray Harmon Jr. The senior Harmon is a frequenter of auctions who decided to turn his hobby into a business. For the past six months he has been selling goods at the Canton flea market, but recently moved to Ogdensburg to cut down on travel time.
The move seems to be paying off, according to Harmon Jr., who said the store has been busy.
"I was surprised even the first day we had a decent crowd," he said. "Things have really picked up in the short time we've been open."
Ray's Odds 'n' Ends sells a wide variety of items, but Harmon Jr. said a main purpose of the store is to provide St. Lawrence County residents with an outlet for furnishing their homes, without breaking the bank.
"Our goal is to sell discount furniture," said Harmon Jr. "A lot of people can't afford to run out and buy new furniture. We want to give them another option."
While the store’s main goal may be providing affordable furniture, the store has also become a new home for artists and craftsmen looking to sell their goods.
"One of the things we do with consignments is we take local artists and hand crafters and sell their items for them," he said. "We have artwork from some local artists and some from Pennsylvania," he said. "We also have a guy who plans to sell handmade furniture through the store."
Although the store has been open for about two weeks, Harmon said a grand opening event is planned for May 3-5. He said all items will be marked down 10 percent, and anyone who makes a purchase will be entered into a drawing for $25 and $50 gift certificates.
Harmon said an early bird special is also underway. He said anyone who makes a purchase at the store between now and the grand opening event will also be entered into a gift certificate raffle.
"Come down take a look around check us out. I am sure you will find something you want."
