The New York Power Authority and the State University of New York have undertaken energy efficiency measures at 10 SUNY campuses including a $7 million wind power installation at SUNY Canton.

The wind power system, announced in June 2012 with a price tag then of $6.6 million, is being designed by Northland Associates of Syracuse with a contract with NYPA.

The NYPA trustees said the multi-year contract with Northland is for the design and construction of a large-scale distributed wind power system at SUNY Canton.

The first phase involved the overall design and permitting of the system. Pending successful completion of Phase I, Northland would receive further authorization to proceed to the second phase, which entails the actual construction of the project, according to NYPA.

The projects listed this week, which are either in development or were completed in 2013, seek to reduce energy use at state-owned or managed facilities by 20 percent by the year 2020. The $80 million in energy efficiency installations at the SUNY campuses across the state include new lighting, heating and ventilation upgrades, new electric motors, and replacement of outdated boilers and chillers.
