A hard-fought effort and a few come-from-behind wins helped the St. Lawrence women's tennis team upset RPI 7-2 in the first Liberty League match of the season. The Engineers are ranked 15th in the Northeast region by the ITA, while the Saints sit in 20th.
The Saints (9-1, 1-0) built a 2-1 lead in doubles play, with wins by Elkie Vandenbeemt and Morgan McNeal in the first spot, 8-2, and Georgia Comber and Anna Young in the second position, also 8-2. The third doubles pairing of Samantha Miller and Hallie Young fought back from down 7-4 to pull within one at 7-6, before eventually falling 8-6.
In singles play, Olivia Arroyo was down 5-4 in the second set of her match against Emily Laurilliard in the second position before coming back to win the set 7-5 and the match (6-2, 7-5).
McNeal put together the biggest comeback of the day in the third singles spot, as she dropped the first set to RPI's Christina Ciamarra and was down 4-1 in the second before storming back for a 6-4 win and taking the third set 6-1.
Comber, Anna Young and Hallie Young also earned wins at No. 4, 5 and 6, respectively. Anna's win in the fifth spot came by virtue of a 10-5 super tiebreaker victory over Kelsey Ham.
The Saints will continue the Liberty League portion of their schedule with a match against Skidmore at the Saratoga Regional YMCA on Sunday.
