POTSDAM, N.Y.—The top-ranked Oswego Lakers (18-2, 11-0 SUNYAC) scored four first period goals and cruised to an 8-1 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (5-13-1, 3-8) at Maxcy Hall on Friday night. Junior forward Ian Boots (Akwesasne, N.Y./Ohio State University) scored two goals for Oswego, while teammates sophomore forward Chris Muise (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Blades), sophomore forward Tyler Leimbrock (Bolton, Ontario/Oakville Blades), and senior forward Chris Laganiere (Owego, N.Y./Pembroke, Lumberkings) each contributed a goal and two assists. Potsdam freshman forward Adam Place (Toronto, Ontario/Bowmanville Eagles) scored for the Bears.
The Lakers got on the board just 1:08 into the contest as sophomore forward Paul Rodrigues (Etobicoke, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) fired a shot off the back of Bear junior goaltender Trevor O’Neill’s (Bobcaygeon, Ontario/Stouffville Spirit) leg from behind the net. Almost three minutes later Muise finished off a two-on-one, beating O’Neill between the pads. Leimbrock struck at the 10:26 mark wrapping the puck around O’Neill after being fed in front. Seven minutes later senior forward Andrew Mather (Nepean, Ontario/Nepean Raiders) roofed a rebound on the power play and Oswego took the 4-0 lead into the locker room.
Play evened during the second period and the Bears took advantage of their first power play midway through. At the 9:42 mark Place beat Laker junior goalie Paul Beckwith off a rebound for his first collegiate goal. Freshman forward Mike Arnold (Didsbury, Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) and senior defenseman Zack Juliano (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Valley Junior Warriors) each assisted on the goal. Eight minutes later Boots got his first to reclaim Oswego’s four-goal advantage.
The Lakers didn’t let up in the third period. Laganiere scored 1:36 into the final stanza. Boots netted his second on the power play at 3:59. After the goal O’Neill was replaced in goal by Potsdam junior goaltender Kevin McFarland (St. Louis, Mo./Woodstock Slammers). Senior forward Owen Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./U.S. Air Force Academy) closed the scoring with 5:11 remaining with a shot that squeaked through McFarland on his left side.
O’Neill made 29 saves in the first 43:59 and McFarland finished with nine in the final 16:01. Beckwith sealed Oswego’s win with 30 saves. Potsdam was 1-5 on the power play and Oswego went 2-8.
The Bears return to action tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Cortland Red Dragons. The game is the third of a triple-header in the first-ever Hockey Day in Potsdam. SUNY Potsdam has teamed up with Potsdam High School and Clarkson University for the event, as each team will host a contest on Sat., Jan. 29. Fans can purchase one ticket good for admission to all three games for just $20. Tickets to each individual game will also be available for purchase at each site. Proceeds from the $20 all-inclusive ticket sales will benefit Marine Cpl. Aaron Howell. Additionally, any entrance fees collected at Maxcy Hall on that date will benefit the 24-year-old Parishville native, who was severely injured during a tour in Afghanistan last April.
