New ideas and practices needed for county finances, says Ogdensburg man

To the Editor:

I am writing to express my support for Derek Van House, CPA for St. Lawrence County Treasurer. I have enjoyed a business relationship with Derek and his firm and wish him the best in his new endeavor.

I have done some homework comparing the two main candidates and their qualifications for the job as St. Lawrence County treasurer. Derek holds a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Oswego majoring in accounting with minors in finance and statistics.

After working in industry for a few years in Boston, he returned to the North Country to work in public accounting. He took and passed the CPA exams in 2002 and rose to the level or partner in the firm in short order. These are major accomplishments. He has 17 years in public accounting, much of that as a specialist in governmental auditing.

He knows the problems and has developed solutions for many governmental clients. Derek’s opponent in the upcoming election holds a two-year degree from Mater Dei College. She does not appear to have the depth and breadth of training and knowledge to perform the job as county treasurer that Derek does.

From my point of view, the choice is very clear. St. Lawrence County desperately needs the background of Derek Van House in the county treasurer seat. It is our best chance to separate from the old institutional ideas and practices.

Let him put his experience and knowledge to work for St. Lawrence County. This is a great opportunity to elect our first CPA to the treasurer’s position. Please vote for Derek Van House, CPA for county treasurer.
