MADRID -- A new bakery and a new country store have opened in a century-and-a-half-old building on the town square in Madrid.
The grand opening of Martin's Country Store and Anastasia's Bakery and Café is set for Saturday, Sept. 27 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be free items, including mini-cupcakes, and in-store specials to celebrate the opening.
The businesses had a “soft” opening Aug. 22 and are operating on business hours of Tuesday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The old store has been completely renovated to accommodate the businesses
The bakery, owned and managed by Anastasia Hull, 21 years old, is the only one of its kind for miles around. Fresh baked goods are created every morning, including gluten-free, vegan, and orders upon request for special dietary needs. Hull, a Madrid native, is a recent graduate of Paul Smiths College with a degree in baking and pastry arts.
The country store is a branch of Martin's Country Store in Moira, owned and managed by Justus Martin. The store is known for its bulk goods, local produce, meats and cheeses, and selection of healthy snacks, along with bulk chocolates and candies. The store also offers seasonal fruit in bulk by order.
The café in the store offers freshly brewed Park Bros Coffee, which is roasted locally. Espressos and cappuccinos are available during the morning.
The building dates back to the mid-1800s and was a men's clothing store for many years, according to Nancy Hull, who owns the building with her husband.
“My husband and I own the building, and he completely remodeled it from bottom to top,” she said. “We reclaimed the original sign from the shop and it is prominently displayed in the present store.”
