North Country This Week and NorthCountryNow.com have been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Google Journalism Emergency Relief Fund.
The fund was launched as part of the Google News Initiative to support small- and medium-sized news organizations producing original news for local communities.
More than 12,000 applications were received and about 5,300 newsrooms world-wide were selected for funding by staff at the search engine.
The fund’s aim is to support the production of original journalism for local communities in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the search engine.
At North Country This Week, the funding will help supplement reporting on the coronavirus threat and other important issues in St. Lawrence County. Since mid-March, more than 450 stories about how the pandemic has affected the area have been published on NorthCountryNow.com.
