CANTON – Milk cans retrieved from a barn after it burned down on Waterman Hill near Pierrepont many years ago have been returned to their original farm and are being used to hold sap during sugaring season.

The farm, owned then by Kenneth Aldous, was a dairy farm that provided milk to Queensboro Milk Plant, a processing plant located on Governeur Street in Canton. The plant used to serve the dairy farmers of the North Country from the 1930’s.

Though no longer in operation, its legacy as the processing plant of St. Lawrence County still stands, according to Brandon Aldous who took the photo.

When the barn burned down, the milk house wasn’t as badly burned as the rest of the barn. The milk cans were retrieved from the milk house and stored away for years. In 2005, there was an estate auction at Aldous Acres, as Mary Aldous was ready to sell off the material goods still on the farm. The milk cans were purchased in the auction, and left the farm.

The milk cans were returned to the farm this year, now owned by Rodney and Stacey Aldous.

“Though just milk cans, they hold a lot of history, not only in the Aldous family, but a little piece of Canton history as well,” said Brandon
