MASSENA -- The New York Power Authority’s Hawkins Point Visitors Center and Boat Launch will offer expanded summer hours starting this weekend.
The admission-free visitors center will now be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.
The visitor center offers exhibits on energy, electricity, history and the environment. Visitors can hop on a bicycle generator and turn pedal power into electricity or have a hair-raising experience with static electricity using the Van de Graff generator. An audiovisual terrain map charts the course of the mighty St. Lawrence River from Ogdensburg to Massena. A community room is also available for public use. There are also panoramic views of the project’s power dam from Hawkins Point.
Last year, there were more than 25,000 visitors to the Hawkins Point facility. The visitor center will again host its “Beat the Heat” summer campaign with a full day of free movies every Tuesday from July 5 through August 30. Family-friendly films will be shown at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. in the auditorium.
In addition, throughout the year, NYPA offers Friday matinees at 1:30 p.m. featuring contemporary and classic films. These events are free and open to the public.
Movie schedules and information on other visitor center events are at www.nypa.gov/vc/stlaw.htm. For more information or to book a tour, call 315-764-0226 ext. 302.
