MASSENA -- The village board okayed a slight reduction in garbage fees at their Tuesday meeting.
The monthly charge is now $21.50, down from $22.75. The bi-monthly fee is $43, down from $45.50. The quarterly price is now $64.50, down from $68.25. The prices apply to both family and commercial units.
Public Works Superintendent Hassan Fayad said he and representatives from his office got the county to cut their tipping fees from $122 per ton to $90 per ton. This saves the village $106,000 annually, he said.
Village resident Shawn Gray wanted to know how much of the savings are actually being passed on to the taxpayers. Mayor James Hidy didn’t have exact figures but said he would find out.
He said he is concerned that a decrease now could mean having to bond for something like a new garbage truck in the future.
Village treasurer Julie Sharlow said Fayad originally wanted to cut the prices even lower, but she recommended the rates the board approved for the exact reason Gray mentioned.
