MASSENA -- Mayor Tim Currier is asking people who plan on trick-or-treating to remain in their own neighborhoods and follow pandemic protocols.

Covid-19 has many citizens concerned about safety on Halloween. The New York State Health Department has issued guidelines and recommendations to ensure the safety and health of everyone on Halloween. These can be picked up at the Village Clerk’s Office, or from https://on.ny.gov/2HJ8DhQ .

If someone chooses not to hand out treats this year, respect their decision, Currier said. If someone chooses to not participate, the mayor’s office recommends leaving exterior lights off and place a visible sign on the door that says “No Trick or Treating.”

All Covid-19 safety protocols should be followed, including social distancing, small family household groups and the wearing of mask. Wash hands frequently, and if possible, bring hand sanitizer, Currier said.

Those handing out treats should avoid personal contact with trick-or-treaters and only give out or pick up commercial wrapped treats. Currier says he is highly recommended that trick or treating be concluded by 7 p.m., this year and that trick or treaters remain in their own neighborhood. This will minimize exposure for all who intend to participate in traditional Halloween activities, Currier said.

Also, for those wishing to ensure a safe way to participate in trick or treating, the Massena Drug Free Community Coalition’s Drive-thru Trunk or Treat, supported by several community partners, that will be held for children of the community. The event will take place on Oct. 31st from 1 to 3 p.m. in the front circle of Massena High School.

“Safety and Respect should be our theme for Halloween this year,” a news release from the mayor’s office says. “We encourage the community to enjoy this safe way to celebrate Halloween this year. Be careful, be respectful and stay safe. Happy Halloween.”
