MADRID – A Fayetteville man has been charged with drunk driving and several other charges after crashing into a telephone pole and fleeing the scene, according to state police.
Police charged Evan P. Koster, 43, with aggravated driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, failure to keep right and unsafe speed.
The incident occurred shortly before 5:11 p.m. Wednesday after the 2004 Volvo Koster was driving south on NYS Hwy. 345 failed to negotiate a curve and struck the telephone pole.
Police said Koster left the scene but was apprehended a short time later by St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies and state Forest Rangers.
Police said Koster’s blood alcohol level was .20 percent, 2 ½ times the .08 percent threshold for DWI.
He was transported to state police barracks in Norfolk for processing without incident. He is to face the charges in Madrid Town Court on Aug. 9.
