CANTON -- The Cornell Cooperative Extension, 2043B State Highway 68, will host “Maple Syrup Science Event” Friday, April 3, from 3 to 6 p.m.
Did New York State Maple Weekend leave you hungry to learn more about sugar maple trees? In this joint event, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County and Nature Up North will offer two great ways to learn about maples.
Nature Up North has a new initiative called Monitor My Maple, a citizen science project in which North Country residents observe and record the dates of seasonal changes in local sugar maple trees.
“It’s a great family project, and by simply recording when the buds break or leaves form on a maple tree in your yard, you can contribute important information on how climate, habitat, and human activity are affecting this cherished species,” event organizers said.
Nature Up North will lead a demonstration on how to identify and monitor your maple, and discuss the general health and status of local sugar maples.
Then there will be a tour of CCE’s sugar bush, including the chance to see extensive tap lines and check out their newly renovated sugarhouse. There will be fresh syrup samples.
Tours are planned for 3:15 and 5 p.m. Nature Up North’s Monitor demonstration begins at 4:15 p.m.
