Leesburg, FL - Sophomore righty Greg Jasek (Chittenango, NY) held the eight-ranked Cortland State scoreless for four innings, but eventually the high-powered offense of the Red Dragons broke through to defeat the Clarkson University Baseball team 7-1 on Saturday afternoon at Pat Thomas Stadium.
The Golden Knights fell to 1-2 overall on the season and will face Brockport State on Sunday in a doubleheader, their fourth and fifth straight games against teams from the SUNYAC. Cortland improved to 10-3 on the season.
Jasek, the Liberty League Rookie of the Year in 2013, had a solid performance for the Golden Knights scattering nine hits in seven and two-thirds innings, whiffing four and allowing a pair of walks. Neither team did much offensively until the Red Dragons were able to tally an unconventional run in the fifth on a double steal, with the lead runner coming home on an overthrow. In the sixth inning, Cortland was able to pick up a pair of runs on a two-run double by Bryan Marotta. However, Clarkson showed a spark on offense in the bottom half of the sixth when John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) and Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After the next two hitters were retired on fly balls, Tim Beninati (Schoharie, NY) hit a line drive off the pitching mound that caromed far enough away to allow Coleman to race around and score, making the tally 3-1.
The Red Dragons pushed two runs across in the eighth when Donny Castaldorf delivered an RBI single and then stole home on a double steal. Cortland also added a pair of runs in the ninth as insurance runs.
In addition to pitching well, Jasek went 2-for-4 at the place and junior infielder Bobby Derico (Watervliet, NY) was 3-for-4. For Cortland, Max Rosing and Matt Wild each went 2-for-4 and Castaldorf was 2-for-3. Brandon McClain won his third game of the year for Cortland, allowing a single run on six hits and a walk while striking out three.
