To the Editor:
As a new resident of the North Country, the weekly paper is a great service for providing local news. But I have become increasingly disappointed with front page stories, most of which appear to be politically slanted.
For example, the recent story on the Canton School budget states “Governor Kathy Hochul’s executive budget plan includes proposed huge cuts in Foundation Aids to schools.” In contrast, Spectrum New reports that the proposed Fiscal Year 2025 Foundation Aid for schools is a 2.1% increase of $507 million, and Foundation funding has been boosted 33% since 2021 when Hochul took office.
Yes, it is too bad that some schools such as Canton will have reduced funding under the revised Foundation formula, but other North Country schools such as Saranac and Plattsburgh will receive increased funding of more than $1.8 million under the proposal (Alliance for Quality Education website). Let’s keep the news balanced.
