Frieda W.M. Schmenkel, 95, Louisville

LOUISVILLE -- Family and friends are welcome to call the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena on Friday, April 5, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and Saturday, April 6, 2024, from 10:00 am until time of funeral services at 11:00 am with Pastor Connor Longaphie officiating.

Burial to follow funeral services in Louisville Community Cemetery for Frieda W.M. Schmenkel, age 95.

Frieda passed away after a brief illness at Upstate Medical Center, in Syracuse on Sunday, March 31, 2024.

Frieda was born on July 2, 1928, in Oldenburg, Germany to Anton and Mariechen (Rüscher) Fickenfrers. She attended secondary school in Germany and became a telephone operator.

She married her loving husband, Wolfgang Schmenkel, on April 28, 1951, in Oldenburg, Germany. In 1958 they immigrated to Dresser, WI, along with their daughter, Elke. After which the family moved to New York, NY where their daughter, Karen, was born.

In 1970, Frieda became a U.S. citizen. In 1972, they relocated their family to Massena, NY, where she and her late husband operated the Meadow View Motel, now the Econo Lodge, and Restaurant Bauernstube.

Frieda was a communicant of St. Matthews Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Cornwall Ontario Canada.

She also enjoyed cooking for family and friends, spending time in her garden and nurturing her houseplants.

Frieda is survived by her loving daughters, Elke Thompson of Louisville, NY, Karen and husband, Christian Dittrich of Monroe, CT, four grandchildren, Krista and Roy (husband) Stone, Michael Thompson, Erika and Seth (husband) Donalis and Alexandra Dittrich; along with 6 great-grandchildren: Noah, Sierra, Autumn, Savannah, Jack and Amelia. Frieda is also survived by her sister, Ursula Treutler.

In addition to her parents, Frieda was predeceased by her husband, Wolfgang Schmenkel, in 1992.
