OGDENSBURG — The Frederic Remington Art Museum has appointed Maggie McKenna as its new executive director.

McKenna brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in strategic planning, community engagement, fundraising, grant writing, program planning, and staff management, making her the ideal candidate to lead the Museum into its second century, a press release from the museum said.

"Maggie's previous role as the executive director of SLC Arts has been transformative, as she successfully steered the organization from a state of near collapse to becoming a prominent arts institution in our region over the past five years. Her dedication, vision, and leadership have invigorated the local arts community and ensured the sustainability of the organization," the museum said.

Under McKenna's guidance, SLC Arts flourished through innovative programming, robust fundraising efforts, and a strategic vision that revitalized the organization's mission, the press release said.

Prior to serving as SLC Arts executive director, McKenna worked as the director of the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce, adult program coordinator at the Potsdam Public Library, and the program and development coordinator at TAUNY in Canton.

A graduate of SUNY Potsdam with a music bachelor’s degree in violin performance and a mathematics major, McKenna also holds a master’s degree in business administration from Clarkson University.

McKenna also served as a Potsdam Village Trustee from 2018 to 2021.

"We are thrilled to welcome Maggie McKenna as the new Executive Director of the Frederic Remington Art Museum," said Douglas McDonald, President of the Museum's Board of Trustees. "Maggie's remarkable accomplishments at SLC Arts and her unwavering commitment to the arts make her the perfect leader to steer the Frederic Remington Art Museum into its next century. We eagerly anticipate the innovative direction she will bring to our Museum."

McKenna expressed her excitement about joining the Frederic Remington Art Museum, stating, "I am truly honored to become a part of the Frederic Remington Art Museum, an institution with a rich history and an extraordinary legacy. I look forward to working closely with the Board, staff, and the Ogdensburg and North Country community to build upon the remarkable foundation laid over the past century. Together, we will create a new vision for the Museum that preserves its heritage while advancing its mission in a way that resonates with today's audiences."

The Frederic Remington Art Museum's mission is to expand and deepen appreciation and understanding of Remington’s work by engaging contemporary audiences and keeping his legacy relevant.

As the Museum enters its second century, the Board said its confident McKenna will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of this beloved institution.
