Emergency food and shelter programs in St. Lawrence County are eligible to receive $51,265 from the federal government.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) made the award based on the recommendations of national charities.
Local authorities will decide how to distribute the funds to local service agencies, which would then allot them to needy individuals and familes.
Public or private agencies can apply for funds through the program by contacting Tim Felt at St. Lawrence County CDP, One Commerce Lane, Canton, 13617 or 386-1102 for an application. Application deadline is Jan. 10.
Eligible agencies must be private voluntary non-profits or units of government; eligible to receive federal funds; have an accounting system; practice non-discrimination; have a demonstrated ability to deliver emergency food or shelter programs; and if they a private non-profit, must have a voluntary board of directors.
