Ernest E. Shantie, 97, formerly of Chase Mills

CHASE MILLS -- Ernest E. Shantie, age 97, of Santee, SC and formerly from Chase Mills, NY passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the home of his grand daughter surrounded by many of his family.

He was born on June 24, 1926, to Hermie and Marion (Castle) Shantie of Norfolk, NY.

He retired from Alcoa in Massena, NY and Almax in Summerville, SC.

Ernie was the last surviving member of his generation of Shanties predeceased by Hermie (Bub), Harold, Arthur (Art), James (Jim), Elizabeth (Betty), and Robert (Bob.)

Ernie was a veteran of World War II in the Navy and was active in the Pacific war on the USS Fond Du Lac APA 166.

He was a VFW Honoree of the Honor Flight and was flown on a special flight to Washington, DC in 2020 to view the World War II Memorial. He was also honored by the Eutawville, SC VFW as one of the eldest World War II veterans in the chapter in 2022 and received a special letter of gratitude from SC Senator Lindsey Graham.

He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and card player. He also liked to travel domestically and internationally.

He is pre-deceased by his first wife and the mother of his nine children, Mary (Ada Guthrie); and sons, Lawrence (George) and John.

Ernie is survived by his wife, LuluBelle (Hall); and children, Timothy (Tim) in Elloree, SC; Phillip (Phil) in Chase Mills, NY; Frank in Norfolk, NY; Marcia Sucese in Sanford, NC; Michael (Mike) in Orofino, ID; Sandra Arnold in Alexandria, VA; and Brenda Ramsey in Oxford, NC. He has numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren located around the United States.

Funeral services are yet to be determined with a planned spring burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery in Louisville, NY.
