New York State Department of Labor awarded $7 million across nearly every region in the state, but none of the funding from this round made it to St. Lawrence County or the North Country region.
The bulk of funding went to New York City and large awards were also made in Central New York and Hudson Valley.
The awards were announced as part of National Apprenticeship Week and New York State Apprenticeship Month, the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) awarded over $7 million in workforce development grants to boost skills training and employment opportunities across the state.
The grants support businesses, educational institutions, and nonprofits in delivering training programs focused on enhancing job readiness, closing skills gaps, and promoting career advancement, according to DOL officials..
Labor officials say the awards also focus on programming that will “help New Yorkers in disadvantaged communities, particularly the unemployed, underemployed, veterans, low-income residents and others facing employment barriers.”
“These grants represent our commitment to strengthening New York State’s workforce by providing opportunities for skill development and job advancement. By investing in training and education, we are not only supporting individual career growth but also addressing critical workforce needs across the state. This funding will have a profound impact on both our communities and our economy, ensuring that New York remains competitive and prosperous," New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon said.
Although there were no grant recipients in the North Country region in this round of funding, the awards are done on a rolling basis and it's possible St. Lawrence County or neighboring communities could fare better in the next round.
