Lake Placid, NY – Juniors Ana Witkowski and Charles Maitland each enjoyed podium finishes for the Clarkson University Nordic Ski team as the Golden Knights rolled through day three of the USCSA Nationals at Mount Van Hoevenberg.
Clarkson's women placed second out of seven squads with 26 points, five behind a deep St. Olaf (21) squad that had the sixth through ninth positions, and three ahead of Western State Colorado University, which won the sprint event on Wednesday. The Golden Knights' men took fourth out of 11 teams with 37 points in a tightly contested top five. The Knights trailed Western State Colorado University (24), St. Olaf (30), and Colorado Mesa (31), but edged out University of Wyoming (38) in the top five.
Witkowski nearly won the 15K Classic race for the Knights, finishing just 9.9 seconds off the pace with a time of 1:00:46.50, good enough for second place among the 39 participants. It was her third top-six showing in the three events at the USCSA Nationals. Freshman Bridget Wangler took fifth overall in 1:01:44.00, a little over a minute off the top time. Wangler, too, has enjoyed an impressive week, finishing in the top-seven in all three races.
Sophomore Raili Utiger finished off the Clarkson scoring in the women's race, taking 22nd overall in 1:08:34.60. Junior Brianna Szczech came in 29th (1:12:50.10) and sophomore Kathryn Bartosik took 38th (1:24:41.70).
On the men's side, Maitland finished in the third position out of 52 skiers, finishing the 15K Classic in 50:46.10, 17.7 seconds behind the pacesetter. Freshman Michael Giraldi placed 16th overall in 55:33.00 and junior Austin Gillespie came in 18th with a time of 55:42.90 to close out the Clarkson scoring.
Senior Peter Mallery also finished in the top 20, taking 19th in 55:56.0, while classmate Brian Chrzan raced to a 24th-place showing with a time of 56:54.40. Junior Timothy Dunn was just outside the top half of skiers, taking 31st in 57:20.20 and sophomore Ben Longenbach came in 35th in 1:00:06.00.
