POTSDAM -- The Crane Wind Ensemble will explore the varied music of our time and the statement it makes in a concert titled "Statements" at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19 in the Hosmer Concert Hall at SUNY Potsdam.
Conducted by Director of Bands Brian K. Doyle, the concert will feature works by Gunther Schuller, Steven Bryant, Aaron Copland, Roshanne Etezady and Jonathan Newman.
Two shorter works on the program, "Radiant Joy" by Bryant and "Shoutout" Etezady, explore more succinct statements with great enthusiasm. With several works for winds each, the two composers are garnering much critical acclaim for their music.
One of the 20th century's great musical icons, Gunther Schuller makes a host of statements in his Divertimento for Band: "On Winged Flight." The ensemble will reprise this work during Schuller's upcoming residency at The Crane School of Music, from Nov. 11 to Nov. 15.
In the final work of the evening, Jonathan Newman continues the themes and statements explored in "The Rivers of Bowery," which the ensemble performed in September. With its allusions to the Beat Generation and Bebop musicians, Symphony No. 1, "My Hands are a City," brings this concert of "Statements" to a powerful close.
This performance is dedicated to the great musical iconoclast John Cage, from whom some of the most distinctive musical statements of the 20th century were voiced, in the centenary year of his birth.
