Craft, Food & Wine show on tap Saturday at Power & Equipment Museum in Madrid

MADRID -- The fourth annual Craft, Food & Wine Open-Air Market, one of the largest shopping shows in the North Country, will highlight handcrafted, homemade and value-added products with a local flair Saturday, Sept. 23.

More than 80 producers and artisans selling everything from local food to jewelry to home decor will be set up at the St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. rain or shine.

Vendors will be situated along the “streets” of the living history museum at 1755 NYS Hwy. 345, Madrid. Bring your wagons and prepare to shop local!

The event is presented by the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and is modeled after the Craft, Food & Wine Holiday Market which will be held later this year at SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall.

The Open-Air Market was initiated in 2020 as a way of presenting a socially distanced show amid the Covid pandemic.

“The event has been so well received over its initial years, that the outdoor model was kept, featuring fall items compared to products offered at our established Holiday Markets,” said Kathryn Puleo, Chamber Destination Services Manager and coordinator of the event.

“The show is a great one-stop-shop for holiday décor, gifts, or personal pieces. There is something for everyone, and it’s a great way to support local businesses.”

The St. Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum sits on 115 acres and includes a number of exhibit buildings featuring various steam engines and historical artifacts. New buildings this year include the Nevin Church, General Store, and Print Shop.

“We encourage everyone to not only shop, but to also set aside some time to tour the grounds and learn something new about St. Lawrence County’s past,” said Puleo.

Many vendors will accept debit/credit cards, but attendees are encouraged to bring cash for entry, food, and select vendors who do not have a card processing system.

The event is made possible by the support of the County Chamber’s Leadership Circle Sponsors: The Arc of Jefferson-St. Lawrence County and United Helpers.

Vendors interested in participating in next year’s market or other events hosted by the Chamber can reach out to Puleo at Kathryn@SLCchamber.org to be included on the “Vendor Outreach Database.”

Parking & Admission

“As the SLPEM expands its facilities to host large events, the Open-Air Market will have a bit of a new look this year regarding customer parking and admissions,” said Puleo.

Parking will be near Fort Tribute on the east side of the grounds.

Handicap parking will be near the admissions entrance and museum volunteers will offer free transportation via golf-carts to assist with larger items, or for those who would like to be escorted to a building on the further side of the grounds.

Admission will be $5 per person (cash only, 12 and under free), compared to the singular entrance fee per car as in years past.

Prepared Food

The St. Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum’s Kitchen will be open offering the following food items for purchase in their Pavilion: hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, french fries, cheese fries, ice cream and beverages.

Prepared food options will be cash only and proceeds will benefit the museum’s ongoing projects and programs.

About the Museum

The SLPEM preserves and teaches the history of how people of the North County of New York lived and how earlier technologies and events helped shape their lives.

History comes alive through demonstrations, interpretive displays, living history and collections at historical and exhibit buildings.
