To the Editor:
This letter is written in support of Derek Vanhouse, CPA for the right to represent the Republican Party as the candidate in the race for St. Lawrence County treasurer.
Derek is the right choice to win the race in September and ultimately the general election in November.
A CPA has proven their ability by passing a rigorous examination, testing ones knowledge on accounting standards, business law, accounting practices and auditing requirements. In Derek’s close to 20 years of practice, he has experienced a wide array of governmental business operations and public entity programs and made recommendations for improvements when necessary.
He recommends proper internal controls, recognizes inadequate financial procedures and has developed or redeveloped business systems when necessary. To maintain a CPA license, continuing education is a necessary component annually. To be qualified to audit municipalities such as counties and county programs, towns, villages, public schools and other governmental agencies a CPA must take specific continuing education or federal programming annually to learn of changes that take place and requirements mandated.
Federal and state dollars are a big part of the county finances that require special handling in addition to the local funding. Knowing this requirement tells me Derek is up-to-date with all current regulations required to be used in governmental record keeping.
In closing, Derek has the financial expertise, the analytical ability, management skill and experience to run the treasurer’s office in our county.
He is honest, dependable and a good family man. A good person, and one who I would want handling my money.
The primary is right around the corner, on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at noon. Derek needs your vote.
