WASHINGTON -- The Canton/St. Lawrence County Chapter of PFLAG -- Th St. Lawrence County Parents and Friends of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual and Transgender People -- PFLAG -- participated in the Safe Schools Lobby Day on Capitol Hill Nov. 3 during PFLAG’s National Convention in Washington, D.C.
Board member Bill Kirchgasser of Potsdam, at left, met with the staff of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and with Representative Bill Owens to ask for their support for The Safe Schools Improvement Act and the Student Non-Discrimination Act, bills that will give school boards, administrators, teachers and counselors the legal backing to act to protect all children, including LGBT people, and to initiate and implement educational programs that address bullying and harassment in public schools.
The sponsors of these child protection statutes plan to add them to the pending revision of the No Child Left Behind Act.
