Correction officer seriously injured after assaulted by prisoners at Gouverneur Correctional Facility

GOUVERNEUR — A correction officer was seriously injured after being assaulted by two incarcerated individuals at Gouverneur Correctional Facility on Aug. 26, 2026, according to a press release from the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA).

The union said the information came from an incident report, but the report was not provided with the statement.

According to the union, the incident began in a housing unit when the officer attempted to conduct a pat frisk of an incarcerated individual who was acting aggressively. A second individual then grabbed the officer from behind and repeatedly struck him in the face.

The officer was knocked to the floor and may have lost consciousness, according to the press release. Responding staff found the officer with significant facial injuries and blood on his face.

The officer was evaluated by facility medical staff and later transported to an area hospital. According to NYSCOPBA, he sustained broken ribs, broken teeth, a broken nose and facial lacerations. His left eye was swollen shut, and he also suffered other facial injuries.

The union said one of the individuals involved became aggressive and resisted officers attempting to restrain him. Multiple officers used physical force and mechanical restraints to gain control. During an escort to the infirmary, the individual again became aggressive and attempted to spit on an officer.

A second correction officer reported lower back pain following the incident but remained on duty, according to the union. Other responding officers were evaluated and reported no injuries.

NYSCOPBA Central Region Vice President Bryan Hluska said the incident highlights the risks faced by correction officers and called for accountability for assaults against staff.

The incident remains under investigation, according to the union’s press release.
