The Clarkson University Hockey team overcame a 2-0 deficit early in the second period to gain a 2-2 tie against Rensselaer in its opening ECAC Hockey game of the season before 2,614 fans at Cheel Arena on Friday night.
The Golden Knights, who remain unbeaten at home (4-0-1), stand at 5-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in ECAC Hockey. Clarkson hosts Union on Saturday night.
Trailing 2-0 just over five minutes into the middle frame, the Knights battled back and got goals from sophomores Brett Gervais and Terrance Amorosa to gain the point in league play.
The Knights outshot RPI 40-29. Junior Steve Perry made a season-high 27 saves in the Clarkson net.

The Knights started out strong and appeared to have scored the opening goal when senior Jeff DiNallo picked up a puck off the backboards and stuffed in a shot 54 seconds in. After a video review, however, the play was ruled no goal. Moments later off the ensuing faceoff, DiNallo was looking at a wide-open net, but RPI goaltender Jason Kasdorf was able to recover and stopped DiNallo's shot.
RPI took the initial lead of the contest, scoring at 7:12 of the opening period when Travis Fulton's shot from the point found its way through a screen in front and past Perry.
The Engineers made it 2-0 on Jake Wood's goal at 5:07 of the second, but the Knights came back just over three minutes later to cut the deficit to one. Gervais took a pass at center ice from junior Jordan Boucher and skated down the right wing and fired off a low wrist shot from the bottom of the circle for his second goal of the season at 8:38. Sophomore linemate Nic Pierog also assisted.
With regulation time winding down, Amorosa picked up a loose puck along the right boards and lifted in a shot from the top of the circle that floated past RPI goaltender Cam Hackett with 1:56 remaining.
Hackett came in relief for Kasdorf, who appeared injured after a collision at the RPI net, at 12:01 of the third period.
Both teams, who had two shots in the five-minute overtime, were 0-of-3 on the power play.
