OGDENSBURG– Grain burning inside of a rail car led to a three-hour response from city firefighters Thursday morning, Jan. 22.
Ogdensburg Professional Firefighters shift 3 were dispatched to the area of Railroad Street around 8:45 a.m. Thursday morning in response to reports of smoke coming from a rail car.
Upon arrival, Captain Brunet confirmed the report of smoke and crews went to work immediately stretching hand-line and gaining access to the rail car.
Crews reportedly discovered the rail car to be filled with grain, which had begun to catch fire.
A representative from Ogdensburg Professional Firefighters said “a quick application of water rendered the fire to simply smoldering grain.”
Firefighting crews remained on scene for approximately three hours “applying copious amounts of water to ensure extinguishment was complete.”
Mutual aid was provided by Heuvelton Fire Department crews, who provided a tanker for additional water supply.
Crews were back in service just before 11:15 a.m.
