CANTON -- Cornell Cooperative Extension presents the 2019 Hay/Pasture School on May 4 and 5 at three locations around the North Country – Chazy, Canton and Burrville.
The theme of this year’s school is forage quality for grass-based meat and milk products.
There is a market for grass fed and grass finished beef and lamb and also milk from cattle fed only forages.
However, there are challenges to feeding animals well with no grain supplementation.
Without the energy supplied by grains, it takes longer for animals to be finished and milk production may be less.
Good quality forages are a requirement to do a good job.
Speakers and panels will address those challenges and offer their experiences and know-how during the school.
Steve LeDoux, Adirondack Beef Co., will talk about their grass finished beef program.
Joe Lawrence, Pro-Dairy Agronomist, will talk about making high-quality baleage.
Panel members will share their experiences with grass feeding and finishing at each location.
The program will be offered in Chazy at the Miner Institute on Monday, March 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes lunch.
It will also be offered in Canton at the Extension Learning Farm later that day (March 4th) from 6-9 p.m., dinner included. On Tuesday March 5th
The workshop will be offered in Burrville at the Farm Credit office from 1-4 p.m. A light lunch is included.
Cost is $25 per person.
