The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team got a combined nine goals from Brendan Damm (5) and Robbie Ashlaw (4) as the Cardinals knocked off nationally-ranked No. 17 St. Lawrence University on Wednesday evening in Plattsburgh, NY.

Plattsburgh State, which is earning votes in the national polls, improved to 8-2 on the season after it owned a 42-33 advantage in shots. The Saints, meanwhile, fall to 5-3 despite a six point (4g,2a) outing from Conor Healey. Sam Marvin chipped in a game-high seven ground balls and three caused turnovers, as each team finished with 32 ground balls and 19 turnovers.

Tommy Hovey and Charlie Jennings each had two goals and an assist in the loss for St. Lawrence. Goaltender Nick Ford struggled to stop the Cardinals early, as he gave up 10 goals in 37:34 before being replaced by Andrew Butturini, who didn't fare much better as he allowed four goals on six shots. Ryan Fisher closed out the game for the Saints, who were stifled by Plattsburgh goalie Andrew Hauk, who made 10 saves to earn the non-conference victory.

The two teams played to a 1-1 tie in the first quarter, as captain Pierson Fowler and Plattsburgh's Tim Lawrence changed goals midway through the stanza. However, a seven-goal second quarter by the home team would give the Cardinals an 8-4 lead at halftime. After three straight Plattsburgh goals, Alden Frelinghuysen pulled St. Lawrence within two at 4-2, only to see Ashlaw and James Read push the advantage to 6-2 with goals 1:01 apart. Plattsburgh would keep that four goal lead at intermission (8-4) despite tallies from Charlie Duprey and Healey.

St. Lawrence lingered in the third quarter thanks to back-to-back goals from Caleb Kane and Healey less than two minutes apart to keep it within striking distance trailing 10-6. However, Plattsburgh State would put the game out of reach with four consecutive goals in eight minutes to build a seemingly-insurmountable 14-6 lead after three quarters. Ashlaw had two goals, while Damm and Jack Felter capped the quarter's scoring.

The Saints worked to make it a game in the fourth quarter, scoring three straight goals to pull within five at 15-10. Healey, Jennings and Hovey worked to rally the team, but Damm's 28th goal of the season put the Cardinals back on top by six at 16-10 with only 4:43 left. Jennings and Hovey would add late goals but it wasn't enough to help the Saints draw even, falling 16-12.

St. Lawrence will look to snap a two-game skid when it celebrates a Military Appreciation Game on Saturday, April 5 at home against Vassar. The Liberty League contest is scheduled to start at 12:00pm.
