CANTON – Edward C. Seymour Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1231, Canton, has plans to erect an Electronic Messaging Center (EMC) type sign at its 34 Gouverneur Street location.
On Wednesday night, the Canton Village Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) approved the post’s request for a use variance contingent on the project meeting all EMC regulations in the village code. Final action by the ZBA will be made within 60 days.
EMCs are not permitted in the General Mixed Use zone, where the Canton VFW Post is located.
VFW Post Commander David Pearson said the post’s current sign is outdated, hard to view and lacking in aesthetic value.
“We need to move forward and look to clean up the property to make it more presentable,” said Pearson. “As always, we want to be a good neighbor.”
The new sign would alert members and the public about current events at the post, including meetings, dinners, Queen of Hearts updates, and other VFW Post and veteran-related messages.
