CANTON -- The Canton Village Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing on the Code of Ethics for the Village and Town of Canton on Monday, Nov. 18 at 6:15 p.m. at the municipal building, 60 Main St.
The board of trustees is expected to convene a joint meeting with the town board to pass resolutions adopting the new code for both municipalities following the hearing.
The Canton town board held a public hearing on the proposed Code of Ethics on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
The new code of conduct is 14 pages, which includes a 3-page disclosure statement, and includes provisions for handling conflicts of interest for elected and appointed officials and village employees.
Topics covered by the code include things like interest in certain legislation handled by the boards, financial interests, nepotism, recusal and abstention, private employment which could conflict with official duties, future employment, use of municipal resources, handling confidential information, political solicitations, and acceptance of gifts.
It also sets down a process for appointing a 5-member Board of Ethics to review potential breaches of the code.
Copies of a draft of the policy can be viewed online at https://bit.ly/332Do7n, and are available at the village clerkâs office.
Village and town boards began work on a new code as far back as 2017, and have reviewed draft versions of the policy for several months.
The village board of trustees will hold its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 to conduct village business the same night.
