POTSDAM -- Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s Diabetes Support Group meets May 29 from 11 a.m. to noon in conference room A on the second floor of the hospital’s main campus, 50 Leroy St. CPH diabetes educator Katherine Calcagno will lead a discussion on enhancing diabetes medication compliance.
RSVP is required. Call 261-5393 to sign up.
“Diabetes is a chronic condition and patients may be on oral medications or injections such as insulin for years. Remembering to take the medications in the face of few overt symptoms may be difficult for many people” Calcagno said in a news release. “The good news is that there are strategies which can help improve compliance.”
Diabetes is a metabolic disease affecting 26 million children and adults in the U.S., according to CPH. Without proper management, diabetes can lead to kidney disease, blindness, heart disease and amputation of lower limbs. It has been estimated that 27 percent of seniors over the age of 65 have diabetes and those at greater risk include individuals with family history, those who are overweight, or those of African ethnicity.
The May 29 meeting will include a short presentation, informal discussion and a light lunch.
