North Country This Week
CANTON – The Canton Police Department has a new police officer.
On Wednesday night, the village board approved the hiring of Fisher Tiernan, a Hugh C. Williams High School graduate.
Tiernan, 26, has been employed by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office since 2021, fills the vacancy left by Josh Rose who recently shifted from the Canton police department to be a sheriff’s deputy.
“I am very excited. He has an impressive background and is very community oriented,” stated trustee Beth Larrabee, who sat in on the interview process.
Tiernan’s first day on the force is Oct. 26 and he appointment is subject to a short probationary period.
His starting salary is $49,905.
He follows in the footsteps of his grandfather, John Major, who served on the Canton police force.
Tiernan also served in the U.S. Army.
In other village matters, the village board wants the public to know the fast electric car charged on Hodskin Street is temporarily out of order. A new modem has been ordered and village officials expect the charger to be fixed in a week or two.
The village has submitted its Downtown Revitalization Initiative and RESTORE NY applications. Awards are expected to be announced in a month or two.
