Down syndrome, according to the National Down Syndrome Society occurs when a person has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21 in their DNA.
Some common physical traits include A few of the common physical traits of Down syndrome are low muscle tone, small stature, an upward slant to the eyes, and a single deep crease across the center of the palm, although some display them to different degrees or not at all, according to the NDSS.
The group says one in 691 babies born in the U.S. have Down syndrome.
