Brenda C. (Raven) Sanderson, 82, Canton

CANTON -- Brenda C. (Raven) Sanderson, 82, of Canton and formerly of Hermon died on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where she was surrounded by family.

Brenda was born August 4, 1941, in Gouverneur, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Maraline (Forsythe) Raven.

Brenda graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1959 and attended Strong Memorial School of Radiation in Rochester. After receiving her certificate in X-Ray Technology she worked for Syracuse and Gouverneur Hospitals.


On May 13, 1961, Brenda married William L. Sanderson. Together they raised a family of 4 children. William predeceased her on December 7, 2012.

In addition to working as an X-Ray technician, she was employed by Montgomery Ward as a clerk, Head Cashier for Totum Grocery, Edson J. Martin as a Clerk/Secretary, and Hermon Dekalb Central School as a Teachers Aide. Her last employment was with First National Bank of Hermon which later became Community Bank of Hermon.

Brenda was a past member and President of the Hermon-DeKalb School Board, as well as a member of the Hermon Village Board and a member of the Hermon Library Board.

She was a part of the local and county level Senior Citizen groups and was Regional President of the St. Lawrence County Senior Citizens. Her community service also included being a Den Mother of Cub Scouts and Secretary/Treasurer for Hermon Dekalb Central School Wrestling Booster Club. Brenda was a communicant and active member of St. Mary’s Church in Canton.

Brenda is survived by three sons, Robert Sanderson, James (Shelly) Sanderson, and Steven (Kristen) Sanderson; grandchildren, Brigette (Joey) Conklin, Rachel Sanderson, Abbigale, Emma and Brayden Sanderson and a great-granddaughter Lilly Conklin. Also surviving are a sister Debra (Joe)LoSurdo as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Lloyd and Maraline and her husband, William, Brenda was predeceased by a son, Michael Sanderson and by siblings, Marla LeClair and Brent Raven.

Calling hours for Brenda will be held on Monday, April 8, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Church, with Father Bryan Stitt, celebrating. Burial will follow in the Hermon Cemetery.
