OSWEGO, N.Y.—Oswego State (5-6, 2-3 SUNYAC) built an 11-4 halftime lead and held off the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-7, 1-4) 15-9 on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman midfielder Brittany Blake led the Bears with a career-high three goals and sophomore midfielders Emily Petit and Margaret Wall each chipped in two tallies. Erannan Shattuck had a game-high five points for the Lakers with three goals and two assists.
Wall opened the scoring just 1:36 into the contest to give Potsdam its lone lead of the game. Oswego's Esther Gabriel answered 19 seconds later, igniting a 6-0 run over the next eight minutes. Blake slowed the Laker charge with her first goal at 14:49, but Oswego responded with two straight for an 8-2 lead at the 11:19 mark. Sophomore midfielder Katie Putnam got into the scoring column at 8:20, but again the Lakers scored the next two. Sophomore attack Bailey Weigel closed the gap to 10-4 with 3:31 left in the period, but Oswego's Corinne Marsh had the final goal of the half 1:15 later.
The Bears faired much better in the final 30 minutes. Potsdam opened the second half with a 3-0 run on a goal from Petit and two from Blake. Petit and Wall added two more as the teams traded the next four goals and the score was 13-9 with 14:01 on the clock. However, Oswego netted the final two markers to close out the contest 15-9.
In goal Potsdam junior Jen Chmiel finished with six saves and Nikki Greco matched her to earn the win for the Lakers.
Oswego edged the Bears in shots (31-28), ground balls (33-26) and draw controls (15-11) on the afternoon. Weigel hauled in another eight draw controls add to her conference lead (78) in that category.
