POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (6-15, 4-10 SUNYAC) rallied late and outscored Oswego State (6-16, 2-13) 15-5 in overtime to defeat the Lakers 89-80 on Friday night. Bears senior captain Jessica Kouzan (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) scored 21 points to move past Maureen Curley '09 into sixth place on the program's all-time scoring list with 959 career points. Kouzan also hauled in 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Junior captain Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) grabbed a career-high 17 boards to go with her 17 points. Laker senior guard Jenn Robbins (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) hit seven 3-pointers en route to a game-high 31 points.
Potsdam never trailed in the first half. The Bears built their lead up to 13 four times in in the opening 20 minutes, but a 3-pointer from junior guard Carli Reynolds (Indian Lake, N.Y./Indian Lake) gave them their largest lead at 33-19 at 5:56. Oswego chipped away at the deficit with a 13-7 run to get within 40-32 at the break. Reynolds scored all of her 13 points by halftime. Potsdam shot nearly 42 percent from the floor in the period.
A three from Kouzan at 16:47, put the Bears back up by 12, but they couldn't shake the Lakers. Oswego senior forward Paula Egelston (Fultonville, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) answered with a layup 20 seconds later, sparking an 18-0 run to give the Lakers a 56-48 lead. Robbins, who had six points during the span, capped the stretch with a three-pointer with 11:33 remaining. A layup from Robbins gave Oswego a 10-point lead with 5:12 left. Potsdam battled back, closing regulation with a 16-6 run to force overtime. Trailing, by five with 44 seconds on the clock, Kouzan went to work. She buried a three to close to within 74-72 nine seconds later. With 24 ticks left, she stole the ball from Robbins and was fouled attempting a game-tying layup. She sank both free throws to tie the score and Robbins missed the final attempt of the second half.
It was nearly all Hannah Kmiecinski (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Thomas) in the extra session. The senior captain hit two 3-pointers and was five-of-six from the line for 11 of Potsdam's 15 points in overtime. Weigel accounted for the other four points as the Bears finished the season sweep of the Lakers, 89-80.
Kmiecinski totaled 14 points on the night. Kouzan also had two blocks and two steals, while Weigel filled out her impressive line with seven steals. Lost in the drama was a career-high 12 points from freshman guard Meghan Driscoll (Troy, N.Y./Troy).
While the Bears were edged in shooting 42 to 41 percent, they outrebounded Oswego 47-45 and only turned over the ball nine times to the Lakers' 14.
Sophomore guard Heather Hebert (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) had a solid night for Oswego with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Senior guard Lauren Nunziato (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Averill Park) had 10 points, five boards and four assists, while junior forward Haley Witchella (Oxford, N.Y./Oxford) rounded out the group with a six-point, 10-rebound performance.
The Bears look to build their momentum when they host SUNY Cortland at 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
