POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball (1-15, 0-10 SUNYAC) fell to SUNY Geneseo (15-1, 10-0 SUNYAC) 83-37 Saturday afternoon. Sophomore guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) led the Bears for the second straight game recording 17 points. Sophomore guard Natalie DiSalvo (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) finished with 12 points and four rebounds to help lead the Knights to victory.
It was slow moving offensively on both sides with no score until the 6:39 minute mark in the first quarter. Geneseo doubled Potsdam's score for an 18-9 lead during the 10 minute span. Fellow freshman forwards Hannah Marcellus (Potsdam, N.Y./Madrid-Waddinton), Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence) and Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) each had two points, while Dufrane knocked down a three to contribute to the Bears' total.
The Knights' offense took off during the second for a total of 25 points, while their defense holding Potsdam to five points. Geneseo took the 43-14 lead into halftime. Freshman guard Mikayla Horton (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) hit from behind the arc and Dufrane made two free throws.
Dufrane and junior guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) each drained a three with freshman guard Mia Jackson (Bronx, N.Y./Mott Hall V) adding two points during the third for Potsdam. The Knights continued their strong offensive showing with 19 points.
Potsdam's offense consisted of five 3-pointers for their 15 points in the final quarter. Dufrane went 3-for-4 from the arc in a 2-minute span and sophomore guard Leah Giavatto (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) and junior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Jefferson C.C.) each hit one of their own. Geneseo held the 21-15 advantage during the quarter and took the 83-37 win.
Walters and Horton each grabbed four rebounds for a team-high.
Junior guard Kelsey Poplawski (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) had 10 points for Geneseo. Three different Knights, freshman guard Allyson Strauss (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton), junior forward McKenna Brooks (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and freshman forward Emily Lavarnway (Ovid, N.Y./South Seneca) each recorded five rebounds for a game-high.
Potsdam will host Plattsburgh State Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
