POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team improved to 7-0 on the season with victories over Johnson State College (1-5) and SUNY Canton on the final day of the Victory Promotions Invitational. Sophomore setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) was named tournament Co-MVP and freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Against the Badgers, Potsdam rolled to three straight victories by scores of 25-8, 25-7 and 25-11. Junior outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) led the Bears offensively with a season-high 11 kills to go with a block and two block assists. Junior middle hitter Megan Smith (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) had five kills and two block assists. Junior opposite Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) added three kills. Scott had six aces and nine digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Maddie Kaplan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) had a contest-best seven aces and junior outside hitter Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) added four.
Potsdam started quickly against the Roos as well, rallying to take set one 25-23 and breezing through set two 25-12. The Bears made set three close before bowing to Canton 26-24 and then sealed the victory with a fourth set 25-17 win. Scott posted another strong performance against the Kangaroos with 13 kills, three aces and 12 digs. Healis and Topf each had eight kills. Rodda contributed 33 assists and three aces. Topf and Kaplan had 19 and 17 digs, respectively. Healis had eight blocks, Smith added seven and Tompkins another five.
The Bears are back in action this Friday night when they travel to Albany to take on the host Gators at 5 p.m. in the Sage Colleges Tournament.
