ONEONTA -- The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team opened its season with a split on Day One of the Oneonta invitational.
The Bears fell to Union College 3-1 in their season opener, but rebounded with a 3-0 sweep over SUNYIT.
Potsdam started quickly against the Dutchwomen, winning the first set 25-21 despite being down 9-2. However, Union rallied for three straight wins by 25-21, 25-19, and 25-18 scores.
Junior outside hitter Dakota Pruiss (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill) led the Bears with 10 kills.
“I was glad to see how we battled,” said Potsdam Head Coach Steve Pike. “For the last three sets they out-executed us, kept us out of system, and did a better job of attacking than we did.”
The Bears steamrolled the Wildcats in their second match of the night cruising to 25-21, 25-21, and 25-14 victories. Statistics from the match were incomplete.
“Everyone got to play and contributed,” Pike said of the victory.
“The offense ran through Rachel Auerbach (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge), Sara Anderson (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) and Kayla Howard (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and Jenna Blujus (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) played very well.
Dakota Pruiss went on a serving run of six or seven aces and Jill Dye (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) passed very well.
Potsdam (1-1) will face Houghton College Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by either a 1:30 or 3:30 p.m. to wrap up the tournament.
