OSWEGO, N.Y.—Sophomore forward Eduardo Figueroa scored in the 72nd minute to help the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-6-1, 0-1-1 SUNYAC) to a 1-1 tie on Friday night at Oswego (1-7-1, 0-2-1). Bears senior goalkeeper Joseph Glackin made a season-high 11 saves to preserve the draw.
The Lakers held a slight edge in play through the first 45 minutes. Oswego outshot Potsdam 11-4, but Glackin turned aside all six shots he faced. Potsdam struggled to test Laker goalie Pat Breen, who finished the half with one save.
Oswego wasted no time in the second half, scoring just seven minutes in. Ryan Purdy's first shot attempt was stopped by Glackin, but he buried his own rebound for a 1-0 lead. The Bears offense picked up after the goal and the pressure paid off at 71:27. Freshman midfielder Mike Jackson set up Figueroa to tie the score. Despite strong offense to finish the game, Potsdam was unable to net the go-ahead goal.
Neither team got off a shot in the first overtime and Glackin and Breen each made two in the second to earn their respective squads a point on the night.
Breen finished with eight saves. Oswego outshot Potsdam 19-13 and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
“It's unfortunate that we gave up a goal on a defensive mix up,” said Bears Head Coach Adam Parker. “After they scored they kind of hung back and we built a lot of momentum. Eduardo scored, but we couldn't get the goal to put us over the hump. Still, it was a solid team performance overall.”
Next, Potsdam heads to Cortland to face the Red Dragons tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
