Over 8,800 members from the New York District of Kiwanis International have joined together to develop the statewide “Everyday Hero” Project.
Local Kiwanis Cubs throughout New York State, in coordination with the Kiwanis family sponsored youth are out to find deserving individuals and recognize their contributions to our communities.
Karen Bage, initiator of the Lawrence Avenue Elementary School Garden Project, has been chosen as an “Everyday Hero,” for the year 2010, by the Potsdam Kiwanis Club.
She received the award on Sept. 27 at the Kiwanis annual meeting at the Ponderosa Restaurant.
Bage was given this award for her efforts in initiating and growing the garden at the elementary school.
She started this project with just a few seeds and now the garden supplies vegetables and fruits to the students at the elementary school.
She has been instrumental in planting and harvesting vegetables, fruits and herbs to provide fresh food for our students.
Karen is also working on making the cafeteria at the elementary school a “green” cafeteria and lowering the amount of waste that is produced.
Karen started with just a few students helping with this project, including the help of our Lawrence Avenue K-Kids and now more than half of all the classes are involved with keeping the garden growing.
Kiwanis International is a thriving organization of service-minded men and women who respond to the unique needs of their communities and address worldwide issues by “Serving the Children of the World.”
Kiwanis volunteers are dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.
