CANTON -- As backyard farming gains popularity, the Canton Planning Board will consider allowing commercial agriculture in residential zones.
The change would allow for community supported agriculture and the raising of fowl and pigs in areas that currently do not allow it.
The proposal includes County Route 27 north from the village like to Sykes Road, Miner Street Road from the village line extending about two miles. It also includes a section from Judson Street Road to the Ames Road, and State Route 310 from the village line extending about one mile.
The change would allow agricultural use by special permits, which would be subject to site plan review.
The Planning Board is seeking public input to gauge the public’s interest, particularly those in the residential zone, according to Michael Morgan, planning board chairman.
The goal is to have a rough draft available for discussion and review at the next meeting Jan. 22 at 7 p.m., he said.
Board members hope to have a final version ready for the town board's March meeting. The town board would then be expected to hold a public hearing in April.
