Aldi’s is considering putting up a new store in Potsdam. Although it would be very good to have an Aldi store in this part of northern New York, Canton would be a much better location. Canton has approximately the same population as Potsdam, but it has only one other food store in the town (Price Chopper). On the other hand, Potsdam already has six food stores: Walmart Super Center (right across Rt. 11 from the proposed Aldi site), as well as Price Chopper, IGA, Save-A-Lot, Big Lots and the Food Co-op. It seems more sensible to put a new store where there would still be a good population base, but with far fewer local competitors. In fact, there is even a good location in downtown Canton: the vacant IGA store in the Canton Plaza shopping center.
