Adirondack Mountain Club plans spring hikes across North Country

The Laurentian Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club will be staging a variety of outings over the next few weeks.

The chapter will host its ADK Weekly Walk in Potsdam’s Bayside Cemetery on Thursdays, April 11, 18 and 25, at 07:30 a.m. Approximately 2 miles, 1 hour round trip. Meet at the entrance to the cemetery (730 CR59, aka Back Hannawa Road). Contact Marianne Hebert, hebertm@potsdam.edu  or 315-265-0756.

A road walk is planned Saturday, April 20 in Hannawa Falls. The Brookfield access roads off Old State Road offer an interesting mix of local industrial history, lovely forests, and some river views. 3 miles RT. Easy. Contact Marianne Hebert, hebertm@potsdam.edu or 315-265-0756. 

A hike up Long Tom Mountain, the highest peak fully in St. Lawrence County, will be staged Saturday, April 27. This is a bushwhack off the Otterbrook trail northwest of Horseshoe Lake, headwaters of the Grasse River. The group will stay on the Forest Preserve and have views east toward the High Peaks through the trees. Moderately strenuous. Contact Tom Van de Water at 315-261-1723.

Trail work on the Tooley Pond Road Trails in Clare is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30. The chapter will perform side cutting, water bar clearing, and general inspection and maintenance on the five trails ADK Laurentian Chapter has adopted along the Tooley Pond Road. The chapter will organize its ADK Weekly Walk on the Munter Trail on Thursdays, May 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 at 7:30 a.m. The group will walk the trail for approximately 2 miles, 1-hour round trip. Meet in the parking lot behind the Clarkson Walker Arena and Hantz Field off Clarkson Ave., aka Back Hannawa Rd. and County Route 59. A wildflower walk is planned at Indian Creek on Saturday, May 4. The group will amble along, stopping to appreciate, photograph, and sniff some of the 20 or so species of spring wildflowers that bloom along the Nature Center trails, 1-2 miles with possible extension of another 1-2 miles. Joint outing of Laurentian Chapter, Adirondack Mountain Club and Indian Creek Nature Center. Contact David Katz, secretary@adklaurentian.org, 315-386-4393.

The chapter will hike the Arkon Lake Loop in Frontenac Provincial Park on Saturday, May 11. 7 miles, not much net change of elevation but moderately rugged terrain. Chapter members will paddle the West Branch of the St. Regis River from Saunders Falls on Sunday, May 12. Gain rare access to a wild boreal forest and grasslands, visit an Adirondack Great Lodge, takeout at a remote cabin. Participants must wear a PFD and bring a lightweight canoe or kayak. No fishing gear is allowed. The paddle is flat, but there is some swift water. Five miles paddling, half-mile carry on rough logging road. With Laurentian Chapter, Adirondack Mountain Club. A hike of Coney Mountain is planned for Saturday, May 25. Joint event of Pride Outside and Laurentian Chapter, Adirondack Mountain Club. This is a lovely mountain south of Tupper Lake with an open rocky summit and great views of the lake. It is also one of the three Tupper Triad Challenge hikes. 2.2 miles RT, 523-foot elevation gain. Chapter members will gather for its ADK Weekly Walk in Bayside Cemetery, Potsdam, on Thursdays, June 6, 13, 20, and 27 at 7:30 a.m. They will walk the roads for approximately 2 miles, 1-hour round trip. A Kushaqua Wildflower Walk is planned for Saturday, June 8. This is a flat, easy walk along the Kushaqua rail trail at the Buck Pond Campground. With luck we will see lots of common wildflowers, and hopefully a few rarer ones. 3 miles RT, easy. With Laurentian Chapter, Adirondack Mountain Club.
