CANTON -- St. Lawrence County legislators have passed a resolution in support of the “Return the Favor” veterans ID program.
The FAVOR (“Find and Assist Veterans of Record”) program, offering discounts and other services to military veterans, has already been implemented by 35 county clerks in the state as a way to honor and recognize veterans for their service and sacrifices.
St. Lawrence County Clerk Mary Lou Rupp and Veterans Services Director Michael Boprey, Jr., with the help of local Chamber of Commerce offices, have signed up 30 businesses to offer discounts to veterans. Two car dealers, Mort Backus & Sons and Blevins Bros. of Ogdensburg, are covering the expenses of implementing the program.
There is no charge to the veterans for the discount card; they just need to go to the county clerk’s office to file their discharge papers (DD-214). They will be issued a card and a list of participating businesses.
The list will also be available on the county website under the county clerk’s department listing. A “Return the Favor” tab has been created with information about the program as well as the veterans ID application and business enrollment form.
The clerk’s office will begin issuing cards at the Military Appreciation Day scheduled on June 16 at Cheel Arena in Potsdam.
